Powell, Joseph Yancey (b. 06 JUL 1920, d. 12 NOV 2004)
Note: Joseph Yancey Powell Jr. Joseph Yancey Powell, Jr., 84, died peacefully surrounded by his wife and daughters on November 12, 2004. Joe was born on July 6, 1920 to Alice Stewart and Joseph Y. Powell. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Katharine Gebhardt Powell, two daughters Julia Powell and Alice Powell Clarke, Alice's husband George Clarke, two grandchildren Maggie Clarke and Joe Clarke, and numerous cousins and close friends. Joe was a native Houstonian. He graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1938. He attended Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas and afterwards The University of Texas in Austin, where he was a Phi Gamma Delta pledge. He was a contributing student writer of the Handbook of Texas, Vol. I. and a second generation member of the Texas State Historical Association. Joe was among the last of the Greatest Generation, serving in the Military Police of General Patton's Third Army. He had a long and successful career in purchasing, retiring as Vice President of Purchasing of Kirby Building Systems. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Houston. Joe's many passions included his family and friends, fishing, sailing, traveling, cooking, football, music of all types, and observing God's creation. He was a founding member of the Surf Oaks Trout Society, dedicated to camaraderie, fishing tales, and the enjoyment of spirits. The family wishes to thank Joe's physicians and the staff of the Cardiac Care Unit at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital for their compassion and expert care. Visitation will be Monday, November 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Dr. Following private graveside services at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery a Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 in the chapel at First Presbyterian Church of Houston, 5300 Main Street. Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77004 or The Texas State Historical Association, The University of Texas at Austin, 1 University Station D0109, Austin, Texas 78712.
