Lieutenant Lynn Grasshoff Writes Letter From Far-Away Australia
The following extracts from letters was written by Lieut. Lynn Grasshoff, and sent to Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Albrecht of La Grange, are deemed of interest to his many friends in the city, and therefore granted space. The Journal appreciates the opportunity to let Lynns friends know that he is still on the job somewhere abroad:
Febr. 5, 1943
Dear Mother, Dad and Toots:
Over here things are moving along in good shape. Our job keeps us busy all the time, days pass by fast. Our living conditions are as good as can be expected under the circumstances. The heat and flies are our greatest worries. But, our food is swell, and occasionally we have ice cream a miracle. We have a big mobile refrigerator which is always full of excellent beef and once a week the cooks turn out a batch of tenderloin steaks that are really a treat. (Thanks to the cooperation from the home front, we have all the coffee, sugar, tires and tools we need.)
Febr. 23, 1943
Mitzie has been telling me in her letters about the turkey dinners and get-togethers at home. Golly, how I do miss all of those good things. You know, we have turkey, too, sometimes. But what kind of turkey! All we have to do if we want a turkey sandwich is to step outside our tent and draw a bead on some old rooster or hen that happens to be around. Are they tough? And no white meat either. Plenty of wild game here, but its hardly fit to eat. However, we fare well so far as food is concerned. In my other letter I mentioned about the meats. We have plenty of canned goods, canned pears, peaches, pineapple, all the coffee we can drink, plus tea, lemonade, orangeade, etc. Id really like to tell you something about our work and experiences, but that will have to wait until I come home. I can say, though, that weve seen enough of this rugged continent You could never imagine such untamed wilderness until you actually saw it Most of this country is still frontier, about like America in 1800. We seldom see a town, there just aint any to see. Recreation for the men is a problem Of course its what one can expect from war. But, morale has always been high; the boys know they have a job to do, and they just pitch in and do it with no gripe or growl. Uncle Sam furnishes (free) cigarettes, soap, tobacco, tooth brushes, shaving cream, hard candies, tooth powder, V-mail stationary, etc. And we have our own Company Post Exchange where the men can buy all sorts of odds and ends. All of us pitched in and bought a short-wave radio that is worth its weight in gold. We can get San Francisco and, of course, Tokyo and Berlin beam all sorts of propaganda to troops over here. But often they turn out good, jazzy music and classified stuff My duties now consist of commanding a platoon and having charge of all company transportation and motor maintenance. Motor transportation is a big problem; no roads, rough country, long runs, heat, dust, etc. I marvel at how those trucks stand up under such a terrific beating Living conditions: Flies and insects are a big bother. Somehow we become accustomed to these things and after a few months of this out-door life it sorta agrees with a fellow We have a doctor with each platoon, theyre good surgeons and could handle almost any emergency if it were necessary dont worry about my welfare, Ill be o.k. You would hardly recognize me now, have a beard that would knock your eye out, but it keeps the flies off my face; am not bald-headed as yet. Seem to be holding my own on the hair proposition. Maybe the sun helps it. Its bleached almost white. Over here the ranches are called stations. They are large and the owners do not measure their size in acres they measure them in square miles. In most cases, however, it requires a few square miles to support one steer. Give my regards to all of the old friends and all the neighbors, the American Legion and do not forget Pop Kruse and Aunt Annie I hope to be home sooner than you expect, and then when I get there I will tell you about a few of my experiences over here.
As ever, Lynn

Note: TLC Opens Football Season on Saturday
Seguin. Texas Lutheran College Bulldogs will open the 1949 grid season against East Texas Baptist College at Marshall on Sept. 24. This marks the beginning of senior college competition on the gridiron for the Bulldogs. Gene Greenshield, La Grange, is one of the 14 returning lettermen on this years squad. He has earned two letters at guard the past two seasons. Prospects are better than at any time in the history of football at TLC as far as material is concerned, but on the other hand the schedule is the toughest on record. Beside the opening game with East Texas Baptist the Bulldogs will face such regarded opponents as the university of Corpus Christi, Randolph AFB, and East Central State College of Ada, Okla., in their eight game schedule. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, September 22, 1949]
TLC Bulldogs Open Season on Saturday
Seguin. Texas Lutheran College Bulldogs make their initial appearance in Seguin Saturday night, Oct. 1 at 8:15 against the Daniel Baker College Hillbillies of Brownwood. This game promises to be a nip-and-tuck battle. Gene Greenshield of La Grange, star guard on the Bulldog eleven, will see plenty of action in this game. The second home game will pit the Bulldogs against the powerful Randolph Air Force Base Ramblers Oct. 8. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, September 29, 1949]
Greenshield Plays Fine Ball for TLC
Seguin. Gene Greenshield, former La Grange grid star, played outstanding ball for Texas Lutheran College in last Saturday nights 65-0 victory over University of Nueva Leon, Monterrey, Mexico. A junior, Greenshield has been a starting guard on Bulldogs teams for three seasons. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, October 27, 1949]
TLC Letterman
Seguin. Gene Greenshield of La Grange has been named a 1949 football letterman for the Texas Lutheran College Bulldogs by Coach Fritz Lehnhoff. Greenshield, a junior, won previous letters in 47 and 48. For his play this season he received honorable mention on the Little All-American selections. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, December 22, 1949]
Greenshield Shines As TLC Shortstop
Seguin. - Gene Greenshield, regular shortstop for the Texas Lutheran College Bulldogs, has been outstanding in the hitting and fielding department in all TLC games, according to ------- Haugen, sports editor there. "He is also a capable performer on the mound," Haugen writes. Greenshield played with the Demons here last summer where he proved his versatility by pitching, fielding and playing third base. In their last game the Bulldogs dropped a ten-inning battle to Southwestern University by a 7-5 score. They will meet St. Mary's University Rattler nine of San Antonio on April 4 in their first game to be played under lights this season. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, March 30, 1950]
Gene Greenshield and George Hagens of Houston spent the week end with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Greenshield and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hagens. [The La Grange Journal, February, February 24, 1955]

Note: Lieut. Greenwood Is Reported As Missing
Mrs. Nathan A. Greenwood (nee Miss Katarina Gebhardt of La Grange) was advised by telegram by the War Department Tuesday morning, briefly: "Lieut. Nathan A. Greenwood, pilot flyer, missing in action, July 5, over Sicily." No further news up to the hour of going to press this, Wednesday afternoon. Lieut. Greenwood and Miss Katarina were united in marriage April 2 of this year; he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Greenwood of Seguin; the two met in that city while attending the Seguin Lutheran College. Mrs. Greenwood left for Seguin Tuesday afternoon to be with the parents of her husband. The news, unwelcome to all connections, has cast a gloom over the city. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, August 5, 1943]
Further News About Lt. Greenwood Awaited
Up to Tuesday of this week the Journal has had no further news about Lieut. Greenwood, husband of the former Katharina Gebhardt of La Grange, and about whom mention was made in the last issue. The telegram that Mrs. Greenwood had received from the War Department merely stated that Lieut. Greenwood "was missing in action." Lieut. Greenwood has been "somewhere in the combat zone on the Italian front for a month. From the Seguin Bulletin the Journal secured the photo illustration and the following lines of mention:
Lieut. Nat Greenwood
"Lieut. Greenwood piloted a B-25 bomber and has been somewhere in the combat zone on the Italian front, where the Americans and Allies are really doing a good job of it for the past week. "Nat is a graduate of the Seguin High School, and attended Texas Lutheran College before going into the American Air Forces. He graduated from Ellington Field near Houston in February, 1943. He was stationed at several fields before being sent across. On April 2 he was married to Miss Katharina Gebhardt of La Grange. His parents last heard from him on July 1 and he wrote he was very busy. "The official telegram stated that he was missing in action on the Italian front over Sicily and that further details would follow as soon as word was had. The entire town joins Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood in sympathy in their distress and in the sincere hope that word will soon reach them that he has been located and is well and safe."
