Groos Was Attorney, SAC Staffer 19 Years
Clarkson Groos, 78, was from a pioneer Texas family whose forebearers came to Texas in 1848 and later founded Groos National Bank. Groos was a descendent of Gustav Groos, who was one of three brothers who started the bank. He died Tuesday of cancer. An attorney, he was on the staff of San Antonio College some 19 years, he was its first technical educational director from 1966 until he retired in 1977. He later practiced law with the firm of Martin and Drought for four or five years. He was one of the most loving, gentle people you would ever meet and one of the most considerate and thoughtful, said a family spokesman. Unbelievably well-mannered, he accentuated Emily Post. In his later years he researched his German heritage. He said. His ancestors were among the first Germans to settle in Texas. They landed in Galveston, then went to La Grange before coming to San Antonio. Groos was born in the same house his father was born in on Washington Street in the King William area. He was always very close to the neighborhood and loved Washington Street, said a cousin, Ann Maria Watson-White. He earned a bachelors degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin and a masters degree from Trinity University. He served his fraternity, Sigma Nu, as president. He married Lillian Clem in 1942. Groos was a lieutenant commander in the Navy in World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Order of the Alamo, San Antonio German Club, San Antonio Country Club and a former Revelers Club president. Survivors are his wife: a son, John C. Groos of San Antonio; a daughter, Cynthia Groos Coleman of New Orleans; and three grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Porter Loring Mortuary with the Rev. Liam Brosnam officiating. Franz Groos Leadership As a City-Builder
A native San Antonian, Franz C. Groos dead in his 71st year was an admirably useful citizen and builder of this city and the region throughout his long career. Few men who have figured in the community life have had so many and varied business, civic, social and cultural interests, or have pursued those interests so industriously and fruitfully. There was scarcely a genuinely constructive move initiated in San Antonio since the turn of the century, but Mr. Groos had a part in it. He was frequently its originator and, more often than otherwise, took the lead in its consummation. Through his most active years, Mr. Groos primary interest was perhaps good roads. He saw more clearly than most business leaders of his day what motor transportation could contribute toward building the city and surrounding territory. He was a pioneer and effective advocate of the street-improvement program which modernized downtown San Antonio. For both, city and country, he was the consistent champion of paving-extension. Through his zealous work with the Chamber of Commerce Highway Committee serving for some years as its chairman and with Texas Good Roads Association, he was concerned with lifting many a South Texas community out of the mud. It could be said of Mr. Groos recalling the Emperor Augustus of Rome that he found South Texas a land of dirt roads and left it paved. Mr. Groos constructive interests were many. A founder of The Groos National Bank in 1912 and its president until but a few months before his death, Mr. Groos, through those 35 years, exerted a stimulating influence on the citys and the nations business life. President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1917 a war year he had been a sturdy worker in that institutions affairs ever since. Mr. Groos was an aviation enthusiast and contributed toward building San Antonio into the foremost military aviation center. He remembered with gratification his successful direction of four Liberty Loan drives for Bexar County in World War I. He was first chairman of the C.M.T.C. here, and a founder of the Order of the Alamo. Mr. Groos had worthy family traditions to uphold. His grandparents had come from Germany in 1851, as seekers after political freedom. His father, Carl Groos, was a pioneer tradesman and banker one of modern San Antonios founders. Franz Groos steadfastly carried forward that tradition. His name is inscribed indelibly upon his native city. [San Antonio Express, Tuesday, August 5, 1947]

Note: Death of Gustav Groos
He Passes Away After Two Months Of Illness
A Cerebral Hemorrhage Was The Primary Cause Of Death
A Review Of His Life
After an illness of nearly two months Mr. Gustav Groos died at 5:20 oclock yesterday afternoon at his residence on Washington street. Mr. Groos accompanied the T. P. A. excursion to Mexico last June. He returned about the latter part of the month and on the way home was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage, a blood vessel over the brain bursting, allowing blood to rest on the brain. He was brought home in a serious condition and ever since has been confined to his bed. Everything that medical skill and careful nursing could do has been done, but without effect. About a week ago Mr. Groos became delirious and last Saturday consciousness left him and all hope of his recovery was given up. Yesterday morning he became much worse and sank rapidly until death relieved him of his suffering. Mr. Groos was one of the most prominent citizens of San Antonio in financial and business circles, and besides a large business acquaintances he has a host of friends who will be grieved at his death. His death was quite a surprise to many. While it was known that he was ill, the fact of his condition being so serious had been kept quiet. The news of his death spread rapidly and soon a large number of friends began gathering at the home to offer what condolence and assistance lay in their power. Gustave Groos was born in Nassau, Germany, June 10, 1832, his father was C. E. Groos. In 1848 Mr. Groos, Sr. and family moved to this country, landing in Galveston. From there they went to Fayette county, where Mr. Groos purchased a farm and was engaged in that occupation for a number of years. In the spring of 1850 Mr. Groos, accompanied by his brothers, went to Eagle Pass, where they were engaged in the mercantile business until 1874, when they moved to this city. Here they opened a wholesale grocery business, which they carried on for two years, and then embarked in the banking business, under the firm name of F. Groos & Co. Mr. G. Groos has been a member of this firm ever since and actively engaged in the business. His business operations have been successful and he has amassed quite a fortune. Mr. Groos was married at Bluff, Fayette county, Sept. 28, 1865, to Miss Anna F. Willrich, daughter of a prominent and wealthy farmer of that place. His wife survives him. They have seven children, Mrs. C. F. Guenther, Mrs. Gus Giesecke, Otto Groos, Miss Minnie Groos, Gus J. Groos, Miss Lottie Groos and F. C. Groos. Deceased leaves two brothers, F. Groos and Adolfas Groos, who resides in Medina, and three sisters, Mrs. J. Giesecke and Mrs. Adolf Giesecke of New Braunfels; also Mrs. Groos, who resides in Germany.
