Note: Death of Robert Raabe, Sr.
Many friends of the family were greatly shocked and grieved last Thursday to learn of the death of that splendid gentleman and citizen, Mr. Robert Raabe, Sr., at the family home a few miles southeast of town, after a long illness. Mr. Raabe had been in failing health for a number of years, and while his death was not unexpected still it has been the cause of much sorrow throughout this entire section, where he had live so long and was so well thought of. The funeral took place Friday afternoon at the Masonic cemetery, Rev. Paul Piepenbrok, Lutheran minister, performing the last sad rites in a beautiful and impressive ceremony. Mr. Raabe was one of the oldest citizens of this section having resided on the home place near Weimar since 1860. He was a quiet, good citizen, frugal, industrious, a remarkably well read, well posted man, one whose memory was almost faultless, and whose knowledge of history occurrences of the past and dates of all important events was little short of marvelous. He was a most interesting conversationalist, and it was a pleasure to listen to his recital of incidents of the past. His memory practically remained faultless up to the last. He was popular among a large circle of friends and acquaintances, and his death is deeply and sincerely deplored by all. Mr. Raabe was born in Muesterberg, Silesia, Germany, Dec. 1, 1837. Came to America in the fall of 1852, landing at Galveston. From that point he moved to La Grange, soon afterwards moving to the present home place, in 1860. He joined the Confederate army at Frelsburg in 1862, the 17th Infantry of Texas, Colonel Allen Division, under General Walker. Served on this side of the Mississippi till the war ended. He was married to Miss Clementina Heller in 1871. Nine children, besides the widow survive. The children are Henry, Robert, Coelestina, Lena, Clems, Frank, Willie, Clara and John. Before the war Mr. Raabe hauled freight and cotton between La Grange and Columbus and Houston. Houston then being a small town. The country between Columbus and Houston was unsettled except at the Brazos river, where there was a small settlement. After the war he hauled freight to Brownsville, and was familiar with almost every foot of the country between that point and Houston. Those from a distance attending the funeral of Mr. Raabe were Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Raabe and Mrs. Henry Ocker of Rosebud, H. J. Laas, Mrs. and Mrs. Placidus Heller, Sr. and Jr. of Columbus and Achilles Roeber of Hallettsville. The Mercury tenders its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family in the heavy loss they have sustained. [Weimar Mercury, Friday, December 3, 1915]
