Note: Another Pioneer Dead
At the farm home near Cedar, after suffering for three years from a complication of ailments, Mrs. Katarina, wife of Henry Nollkaemper drifted in the slumber which is known to all mortals as the sleep of death. In her departure, the tired body and mind are relieved and peace will be hers. In the last three years, when her suffering was intense, and at times of less vigor, she maintained a stoic demeanor, and received the kind ministrations of her family with a grateful heart. The deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of Fayette county, and principally of Cedar, at which place she settled in the year 1851. She was born in the year 1827 in the province of Westphalen, Germany, and with her husband and family came to Texas in 1850, landing at Galveston. In those days there were no modern traveling by railroad, hence the trip to La Grange was made by ox wagon teams, and here the family came in the beginning of the following year. After a year's residence in La Grange, they removed to Cedar and took up the life of the farmer. By thrift and energy, property soon became theirs, and a very interesting family grew up to assist in the accumulation which is ever the result of honest toil. In days past, Mrs. Nollkaemper was instrumental in perfecting the German organizations which made the Cedar neighborhood a household word with the German pioneers, and in the long life she lived among the people of that section, she was ever the good old lady who was always referred to with great reverence. She became the mother of seven children, two of whom died some seventeen years ago. Beside her husband, she leaves six children, all grown and themselves experiencing the affection of happy families. Henry Nollkaemper, who resides at Bridge Valley, is the oldest. Deceased also leaves twenty-five grand-children and twenty-one great-grand-children. Saturday afternoon at five o'clock the funeral was held from the family home, and the remains conveyed to the Cedar Cemetery. Rev. Kern, pastor of the Swiss Alp Lutheran church officiated at the home and grave. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, September 2, 1909]

Note: Death Comes After Year's Illness To Hermann Schroeder
Sunday, May 19, Hermann Schroeder, a highly respected citizen of La Grange, completed the 78th mile post of his early pilgrimage; he was abed, and had been ill for more than a year, frequently rallying from the weakening attacks and sufficiently so to permit leave of the sick room and a drive about the city. Monday the oil of his life's lamp grew less, he struggled against the shadow, he died at 7:00 o'clock, early evening. Rev. Guy B. Duff, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiated at the home and at the cemetery, Tuesday afternoon, and interment was had at the new cemetery. Relatives, hundreds of friends, many from a far distance and from the neighborhood of La Grange, paid reverence to one they esteemed highly while he lived among them. The profusion of flowers, told one story, and the tributes another. Hermann Schroeder, everybody's friend, honorable and upright in all things, was placed to rest. Hermann Schroeder was born in Schwaan, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany May 19, 1857; he emigrated to Texas at the age of 16 years, landing at Galveston, December 30, 1879, absolutely penniless. Delighted with his new home, deciding to become a citizen of the United States, he took the oath of allegiance later and remained a loyal citizen. He was taken under the care and protection of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Frederich Meyer of Cedar, and helped with the he farm work. Later he purchased the Meyer farm, (200 acres) and continued thereon until 1910. Proffered the position of manager of the Farmers Lumber Company, he accepted and remained in charge of that institution until his enfeebled condition forced him to retire. Unpretentious at all times; faithful and conscientious in his work, no greater tribute can be added than, "he was a man to know and to respect." Mr. Schroeder was united in marriage, October 20, 1878 with Miss Margarethe Vogt, eldest daughter of the late John Vogt and wife Franziska Vogt, nee Willrich, of Cedar, Texas. Mrs. Schroeder preceded him in death, April 3, 1918; with his daughter he lived on South Franklin street until beckoned to follow. Mr. Schroeder is survived by his son John Schroeder and wife Pauline; his daughter, Miss Louise Schroeder, Mrs. Marguerite Willmann and her husband Frank J. Willmann; one son, Fritz Schroeder, died in infancy. [La Grange Journal, May 23, 1935]

Note: Rites Held Saturday For John Schroeder, Veteran Abstractor
Funeral services for John Schroeder, 84, a veteran of more than 60 years in the abstract and title insurance business, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran church. The Rev. H. T. Flachmeier, assisted by the Rev. Paul A Grout Jr. of the Travis Street Methodist church, officiated and burial was in the La Grange City cemetery. Graveside services were under the auspices of the La Grange Masonic lodge. Mr. Schroeder passed away Thursday morning of a heart attack he suffered Christmas Eve day. Death to the beloved "senior citizen" came at Fayette Memorial hospital here. He was born May 13, 1880, in the Cedar community, the son of Herman and Magarethe Vogt Schroeder, and was married here on May 23, 1901, to Miss Pauline Melcher. He was bereft of his wife on March 7, 1953. Mr. Schroeder was studying in Galveston in 1900 at the time of the storm. He returned to La Grange to help organize the Fayette County Abstract Co. on October 2, 1902. Mr. Schroeder, who was in the employ of the company at the time, left briefly in 1909 to work in the State General Land Office in Austin and for the Lee County Abstract Co. in Giddings. He returned here as manager in 1911, and had been with the company in that capacity continuously since that time. The firm, which observed its 60th anniversary in November 1962, has a reputation of possessing complete sets of maps of every survey, showing the location and size, of every tract of land in Fayette county - - something of which few similar offices in the state can boast. Mr. Schroeder became a trustee of the La Grange public school board upon the death of George Krengel in about 1918 and served as member, secretary and president of the board at various times until about 1936. It was during his trusteeship, and while J. R. Peace was superintendent, that the La Grange High school, as used today, was erected. Mr. Schroeder was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church in La Grange, belonged to the Masonic lodge, LaFayette Lodge No. 34 A. F. and A. M., serving a term as master and also serving a term as district deputy grand master; and a member of the Texas State Historical Society. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce. It was through his efforts and aid to Rev. Oscar Linstrum, a Methodist minister here several years ago, that the city was able to enlarge the city cemetery by acquiring the property adjacent thereto upon which was located a colored Methodist church. Mr. Schroeder also was very instrumental in securing the land for the Masonic hall and soliciting the funds for the erection of the building. The deceased was also known for his philanthropy, but he never sought personal recognition for his benevolences. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frank J. (Marguerite) Willmann; and a sister, Miss Louise Schroeder, both of La Grange. [The Fayette County Record, Tuesday, January 5, 1965]

Grout Jr. of the Travis Street Methodist church, officiated, and burial was in the La Grange City cemetery. Graveside services were held by the La Grange Masonic lodge. Mr. Schroeder passed away Thursday morning of a heart attack that he suffered Christmas Eve day. John Schroeder was born in the Cedar community in Fayette Co., Texas, on May 13, 1880, the son of the late Herman Schroeder and Margarethe Vogt Schroeder. He attended public and night school in the Cedar community and business school in Galveston. Mr. Schroeder was in Galveston, receiving his business training, when the 1900 storm struck and he weathered and survived the storm. He then returned to La Grange; he and Pauline Melcher were married on May 23, 1901, who preceded him in death on March 7, 1953. Mr. Schroeder first worked briefly in the Moore Bros. grocery store, and then took up his lifes work. He helped organize the abstract plant under the direction of J. C. Mr. Schroeder left La Grange briefly from 1909 to 1911, (at which time he worked in the General Land Office of the State of Texas in Austin, and also in the Lee County Abstract Company office in Giddings); then returned to La Grange to the abstract company and assumed management thereof in 1911. He became President soon thereafter and served in that capacity until his death. In his earlier years, Mr. Schroeder also did land surveying in addition to his abstracting. Mr. Schroeder became a trustee of the La Grange Public School Board upon the death of George Krengel in about 1918 and served as member, secretary and president of the board at various times until about 1936. It was during his trusteeship, and while Mr. J. R. Peace was superintendent, that the La Grange High School, as used today, was erected.
