Note: Mother of Columbus Lady Dies in LaGrange
Mrs. Frances Chupick of LaGrange, mother of Mrs. W. R. Juren, of this city, died on Oct. 17th. The following report is printed from the Flatonia Argus: Mrs. Frances Chupick, aged 72 years died suddenly at her home in La Grange Saturday evening at 7:30. She had been ailing for several weeks and her condition was thought to be improving and up to within a few moments of her death she was engaged in friendly talk with her family and some friends in her room. She suddenly reclined in her bed and died from heart failure. Mrs. Chupick was born in Wesley, Texas March 19, 1959 [1859]. On February 2, 1877 she was married to Mr. John Chupick. In 1883 they moved to their large farm on the river near Ellinger where they lived for many years. Her husband preceded her in death on December 5, 1905. Nine children were born to them, one daughter died in infancy and another daughter Mrs. Albina Sedlemeyer died September 24, 1930. The surviving children are Mrs. Mary Novosad, East Bernard, Mrs. Dr. T. S. Hruska, Wesley, Texas, Mrs. Annie Sulik, LaGrange. Mrs. Vlasta Kristek, Ellinger; Mrs. Rose Juren, Columbus; Mr. J. F. Chupick, Jourdanton and Mr. J. S. Chupick, Rosenberg. There are also twelve grandchildren. Mrs. Chupick lived for nine years in her new home in LaGrange with her daughter Mrs. Sulik. Funeral services were held from this place at noon Monday. Rev. F. H. Horak of Caldwell and Rev. Moticka were in charge of the services. Interment was made in the family lot at Ross Prairie, Texas, after another service at the church there. The funeral was very largely attended and a long cortage of autos followed the remains to the church were another large assembly of friends were waiting. A great mound of beautiful flowers were evident of the great friendship she had among her people. Mother Chupick will be sadly missed in the writer's house hold. She was a dear friend to us; kind, considerate and good. Her noble live on earth will be richly rewarded in the Great Beyond which gives us comfort. Note: Schulenburg Loses Citizen of 60 Years - Chas. Sengelmann
Local friends heard with sincere regret that the life journey of Uncle Charley Sengelmann of Schulenburg had ended during the night of Thursday. He had numerous sincere friends in La Grange, and was ever a welcome visitor. Sunday afternoon, with an immense attendance of sorrowing relatives and friends, they placed Uncle Charley to rest in the Schulenburg cemetery. To the Journal editor this man was a friend; in the days of the past, it was the friendship that acted as a staff upon which to lean, his counsel was good to follow, his words of friendship were good to hear. Realizing, however, that the inevitable was ever within call, even if not called, the dread to hear of his passing, was constant. Whenever Uncle Charley was present at a gathering, it meant the wafting aside of cares and the enjoyment of the hour. He was of musical temperament, his years of 81 did not prevent him from being active in the singing society, and his voice, clear and to the tone, was ever heard. Schulenburg has lost a valuable citizen; public spirited he was ever ready to do his bit; many will recall the helping hand he willingly extended. His family has lost a good husband and father. He was 81 years old, and had been in business in Schulenburg for 60 years. Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Chas. Baumgarten, Sr. of Schulenburg; Mrs. Rud. Seeberger of La Grange; Mrs. Hugo Horner and four sons, Kollie, Alex, Klondyke and Hester. Rev. Bert Helm, Lutheran minister, officiated. Pall bearers were his grandsons, Chas., Henry and Maurice Baumgarten, Carlton Horner, C. A. Pennington and Jack Sowell. We bid him the last farewell, not with the regret at his departure, that was inevitable, but because it will always create a void when we go to his place of business and fail to grasp his hand and to hear his cheerful greeting. Our sympathy, extended to his surviving relatives is sincere.
Biographical Sketch
Charles Sengelmann, Sr., was born February 19, 1856, in the village of Sprenge, Germany. In his early youth together with his brother August he emigrated to the United States, reaching his adopted country in 1871, landing at Galveston, after a long, hazardous voyage. He journeyed to the interior of Texas, pausing at the village of Welcome, in Austin county, where he obtained employment on a farm. Subsequently he betook himself to Columbus, where he lived for some time with his uncle, the lamented Henry Ilse. From Columbus, he removed to Weimar, where he was employed by Moritz Richter and Tom Insall. In the year 1876 Mr. Sengelmann and his brother, August Sengelmann, removed to Schulenburg, where the two brothers embarked in business. In 1885 another brother of Charles Sengelmann came to America, and in 1889 August disposed of his interest in the business, to his brother, Gustav, and returned to Germany. Throughout all the years, since 1889, the two brothers, Charles and Gustav have conducted their business in Schulenburg, at the same location originally established in 1876. Mr. Sengelmann was united in marriage in 1879, to Miss Elizabeth Arnim, member of a prominent pioneer family of this section, to which union ten children were born. Mr. Sengelmann in the richness of his many years saw the village of Schulenburg of some 300 souls grown to a modern city of some 1800 people. He contributed materially and morally to every movement and program that ------- and public welfare. He was honored as he was loved by those privileged to know him best. For many years he served on the City Board of Alderman. He was a member of the Sons of Hermann and the last Charter member of the local Lodge, Ancient Order of United Workman, having been a member since June 16, 1887. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in his infancy, in the village of Eichede, Germany. Surviving are his wife; the following children: Mrs. Wally Baumgarten, Mrs. Minnie Horner of Houston; Charles Sengelmann, Jr., Mrs. Lillie Seeberger of La Grange; Alex Sengelmann, Klondike Sengelmann and Hester Sengelmann of McCoy, Texas; three children, Henry, August and Mollie preceded their father in death, some years ago. Other survivors are his brother, Gus. Sengelmann of Schulenburg, and another brother, Henry of Sprenge, Germany; a sister died in Germany some three months ago. There are 16 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
