Sladczyk, Fritz (b. 12 JAN 1898, d. 13 JAN 1968)
Note: American Legion Organized Here After W. W. I

The H. J. Ehlers Post No. 102, American Legion of Texas, was organized November 11, 1919, at a celebration held at the Casino Hall and Theo. Lueders was elected general chairman. It was named to honor Hugo Ehlers who lost his life in World War I on Oct. 10, 1918. After the second World War the name of the post was changed to H. J. and A. R. Ehlers Jr. Post No. 102 to honor another Ehlers who lost his life during World War II. John Vogt served as the first commander of the post. The group received a charter granted by the National Department on Dec. 18, 1920. The location of the Legion hall has historical significance and preserves the memory of two earlier structures. John W. Moore was the original owner of the land and in a log cabin on the same site was born the first white child in La Grange. She was Tabitha Moore, daughter of John H. Moore, who later married I. G. Killough and became the mother of John Killough. Later the property was owned by the Casino Society who sold the building and grounds to the American Legion Post on Jan. 19, 1921. An annual Armistice Day Celebration on Nov. 11 is observed by the post with a parade and all day celebration. After World War II the celebration was known as Veterans Day. Present officers of the post are: Dr. D. R. Taylor, commander; Louis Strbacka, first vice commander; John Hanacek, second vice commander; Carl E. J. Fiebig, third vice commander; C. C. Jopling, adjutant; Walter Mueller, treasurer; L. J. Sandera, historian; Gilbert Hermes, chaplain; and Fritz Sladczyk, sergeant-at-arms. There were 21 charter members of the post and now membership totals 225. [The La Grange Journal, Progress Edition 1955]

Sladczyk, Viola (b. 16 DEC 1901, d. 19 JUN 1987)
Note: Swimming Party

About twenty of La Granges young people came over to the Lake for a swimming party, Sunday afternoon. A plunge in the cool, inviting water was followed by a delicious repast of sandwiches, cakes and iced tea. At the close of the meal, a lovely birthday cake, with its yellow candles was brought forth, very much surprising everyone present. Dr. F. J. Marecic, who was guilty of having on that day passed his thirty-second milestone, cut the ring while Miss Viola Sladczyk cut the heart, Miss Stella Speckles, the wishbone; Leo Frede, the button; Ted Lueders the thimble, and Cleo Franke the dime. The crowd then gathered on the banks of the Lake and the time was gaily passed away in chatting, and watching the moon rise. Ice-cold watermelons were the next on the program, and it was a late hour when the following departed for their homes: Misses Dela Schneider, Anita Houslor, Avery Nickle, Stella Speckles, Delta Mevr, Lorena Reichert, Vlasta Chupick, Viola Sladczyk, Lucy Nollkamper, Ann and Olga Nesrsta; and Mesrs. Erwin Franke, Robt. Wilcox, John Chupick, George Lathtam of Houston, Ted Lueders, Cleo Franke, George Listek, Leo Frede, Earl Greenshield of Schulenburg, M. de Barbieris and Dr. F. J. Marecic. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roensch chaperoned the party. [The Flatonia Argus, July 20, 1922]
