Note: CLYDE WOODY, Oct. 3, 1920 - Oct. 3, 2009, 89, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2009 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Clyde was born October 3, 1920 in Princeton, Texas, the son of a sharecropper who moved his family to Dalhart, Texas when Clyde was about 7. At 18 Clyde enlisted in the Army, eager to serve his country and later transferring to the Air Force. During World War II he served his country in India, Burma and China as an aerial photographer, mapping major parts of the region. After having received his early education in a one room schoolhouse in Dalhart he went on to earn a BS and LLB degree from the University of Houston in 1952.His college education was interrupted when he was recalled during the Korean Conflict. At that time he was stationed in Colorado Springs serving in the Judge Advocate General Corp, first as a prosecutor and then as defense counsel. After being Honorably Discharged for the second time he began his civilian life in 1952 by opening his first law office in Houston, Texas.Clyde was licensed in the Supreme Court of Texas; Supreme Court of the United States; Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals; All Federal District Courts and the Supreme Court of the United States.Clyde was Chairman of the Criminal Law and Procedure Section of the State Bar of Texas, 1964-65; a member of Phi Delta Phi; served as Attorney of Southside Place, Houston, Texas, 1955-57; served on various sections of the American Bar Association, Texas Bar Association and Houston Bar Association. He was a member of the Houston Bar; Texas Bar; American Bar; American Judicature Society; Texas Trial Lawyers Association; Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the National Association of Defense Lawyers. Clyde's legal career spanned 45 years from 1952 until 1999, during which time he practiced criminal, civil, family and maritime law. Additionally he practiced and argued before the Supreme Court of the United States in various cases, especially related to the 4th Amendment of the Constitution, search and seizure law, among others, Aguilar v. Texas; Barnes v. Texas; Etchison v. Texas; Giordenello v. United States and Tipton v. Socony. He represented such notables as Judy Garland, Baron Enrico DiPortanova and Sheriff Jack Heard of Harris County, Texas. He may be best known for his defense of Candace Mossler in the 1966 murder trial of State of Florida v. Candace Mossler. Clyde was a Board Certified Specialist in both criminal and family law. He was the Senior Partner in the law firm of Woody & Rosen from 1965 until 1980 and continues as a sole practitioner at his firm Clyde W. Woody, Attorney at Law. His wife, Paula F. Woody, joined him in his law practice in 1989 and the two of them continued his practice until 1999 when Clyde retired due to illness. His wife Paula, sons Allen and Todd, 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 1 brother and 1 sister survive Clyde. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the entire legal community to whom he has given so much. and served to admirably. A memorial service celebrating Clyde's life will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay, Houston, Texas 77024 713-465-3467 with Rev. Bob Johnson officiating. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the same location. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Alzheimer's Research, 640 Jackson Street, Mail Stop 112018, St. Paul, MN 55101-2595.
