A Surprise Wedding
The marriage of Miss Avery Nikel to C. G. Amberg Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 oclock, came somewhat as a surprise to the many friends of this popular young couple. The wedding took place at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Nikel in the presence of only immediate relatives, Rev. R. Heise officiating. Miss Avery is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Nikel, an admirable young lady, and Clinton Amberg is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Amberg of this city, a steady and industrious young man, with a promising future. The young couple took the afternoon train for Houston, their future home. May Gods choicest blessings be showered upon this happy young couple, is the sincere wish of the Journal.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Observed Saturday By Mr. and Mrs. Amberg
Saturday evening with open house from 8 to 10 p.m., Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Amberg observed their golden wedding anniversary at their home. The event was held on the large lawn of the Amberg home, which was enhanced by summer flowers in baskets, gold and white flowers and blooming shrubbery. Hurricane lamps and yellow lights were attractively arranged for illumination. Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Amberg of Corsicana, the only son and daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Amberg, took their place with them in the receiving line. Mrs. Elsie Knigge of Houston and Mrs. George Dietze of Cuero, flower girls in the wedding 50 years ago, registered the guests for the evening. From the lace-laid table, lined with gold, beautifully adorned with a gold and white gladioli arrangement and a single ring wedding cake embossed with gold rosebuds, encircled with tulle and gold lace, refreshments were served. Mrs. E. J. Stanzel and Mrs. J. B. Garrard of Houston served cake, and Mrs. B. D. Oder and Mrs. W. A. Yates served punch. Others assisting in serving were Mrs. Verna Reichert, Mrs. Frank Reichert, Miss Anita Montgomery and Mrs. Bill Barton of Port Arthur. All who assisted with serving wore formal clothes. Mr. and Mrs. Amberg were gladdened at the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Speckles of Houston, brother and sister-in-law of Mrs. Amberg, attendants in the wedding. Of the four couples that served as attendants in the wedding, only one member of the group has been taken by death. Mr. Amberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Amberg Sr. of Rutersville, Miss Laura Speckles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerh. Speckles of Rutersville, were joined in wedlock at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Rutersville, on June 12, 1898. This was the first wedding performed in that church. After their marriage the couple made La Grange their home, where Mr. Amberg engaged in business, then worked in the county tax assessors office and served as county treasurer. Mr. Amberg has served as postmaster since 1934. The couple was blessed with one son, Clinton. Calling on Mr. and Mrs. Amberg on this happy occasion were approximately 200 guests. Out-of-town guests were: Mrs. Johanna Carter, Mrs. H. Thompson, Mrs. Otto Amberg, Mrs. Elsie Knigge, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Brauner, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Stanzel, and Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Speckles, all of Houston; Mrs. Chas. Stafford, Mr. and Mrs. H. Buescher, Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Batot and son, and Mr. and Mrs. B. Meinert of Columbus; John Mauer and Mrs. Rosa Lee Womash of Austin; Miss Anita Montgomery of Port Arthur; Mr. and Mrs. George Dietze of Cuero; and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Mauer of California.

Note: Carleton Richers
A pretty wedding was solemnized in the First Presbyterian church last Thursday, when Miss Minnie Richers of La Grange became the bride of E. M. Carleton of Austin, Rev. M. H. Arnold of Smithville officiating. The church was suitably decorated. To the strains of Lohengrins march the bride entered on the arm of her father. Her sister, Miss Alma Richers, attended the bride as bridesmaid while Everett Withly acted as best man. A number of friends witnessed the ceremony.
The bride was attired in gray charmeuse dress with harmonizing accessories and carried a bouquet of roses. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Richers, residents of La Grange. Mr. Carleton holds a lucrative position in the University print shop at Austin. After the ceremony the young couple left for Austin their future home.
The following out of town guests witnessed the ceremony: Mr. and Mrs. Will Carleton, Miss Ethel Carleton, J. D. Carleton, all from Austin. The best wishes of the entire community follow the young couple to their new home. [The La Grange Journal, Thursday, September 22, 1921]
