When 94-year-old retired architect Woodlief Brown looked up at the 30-foot diameter domed ceiling that he designed in 1968, he saw what he had not thought possible 35 years ago. But he smiled and was proud. On Wednesday, he saw that his building, the Morgan Jones Planetarium, possibly the proudest achievement in his lifetime of building, had passed the test of time, easily adapting to the high-tech capabilities of the digital age. Stars moved across the sky, meteors showered down, comets moved, planets traveled through the sky, stars exploded and died in seconds. Then, for good measure, Brown enjoyed a digital, 3-D virtual trip down the Nile River that actually caused the thrill of movement by just sitting still and watching the dome. The member of the National College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects said he liked the show. "Oh, you bet," he exclaimed, smiling under his hat. "I had no idea this could be done." Brown was the guest of honor at a private showing of the planetariums recently completed modernization. The planetariums invitation-only grand reopening is at 2 p.m. today. Free pubic shows will begin tonight. Architects Steve Ellinger and Richard Rogers of Cadco Architects and Engineers Inc. said they wanted Brown to be the first to see the old planetarium in its modern glory. Cadco oversaw the modernization project. "We wanted to modernize the building, but we wanted to retain the integrity of the building out of respect to Mr. Brown," Ellinger said. "This will always be his building, and we wanted him to know it." Ellinger noted that Browns name was still on the plaque at the planetariums front entrance. "I appreciate that," Brown said. Browns mosaic design of the planet Saturn is still above the front doorway. Brown came to Abilene in 1948. His firm was called Woodlief Brown, AIA, Architects and Associates. Among Browns projects were the underground high school in Aspermont, built during the height of the Cold War; Kimbrell Arena at McMurry University; Bonham and Taylor elementary schools and the Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church on Buffalo Gap Road. "He was certainly a visionary," Rogers said of Brown. No rooms were added during the $400,000 planetarium modernization project. Almost everything that Brown designed is still there. The most-significant changes are a new coat of special paint for the dome, carpet replacement and fabric replacement on the original chairs in the planetarium room and making the building accessible to the disabled. New air conditioning and heating systems were installed. The most-important of the acquisitions is the new $200,000 projector, which can present virtual tours not only of space and earthbound locations, but also tour through the human body and into the world of atoms. The new projector can show 100,000 stars. The old one was limited to 6,000 stars. "This was nothing but an antique planetarium," said Ellinger. "Now, were cutting edge." Woodlief F. Brown
Abilene, Texas
Woodlief F. Brown, longtime Abilene resident, died in Lubbock, Texas, on December 31, 2008. Memorial services will be held at the chapel of St. Paul United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, with the Rev. Greg Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Born on June 3, 1908, in La Fayette County, Mr. Brown moved to Abilene in 1948. He was an architect; his work included the Morgan Jones Planetarium, the Abilene Fine Arts Museum, the YWCA building, the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, the J. W. Hunt Physical Education Center at McMurry University, and many schools throughout West Texas. He was married to Mary Louise Brown, an artist, and they shared an interest in the arts in Abilene. He was the chairman of Abilene's Chamber of Commerce's first Fine Arts Festival. He was a life-long tennis player and was one of the founding members of the Abilene Tennis Association. He participated in many state and national tournaments and was nationally ranked. In 2000, he was ranked eleventh in his age group. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the Abilene Shrine Club, the Masonic Lodge, and the Lions Club. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Sam Magee Brown; his sister and her husband, Willadene and J. D. Graham; his brother-in-law, Sam Magee; and his wife of fifty-five years, Mary Louise Brown. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Betty Magee, of La Feria, Texas, and her children, Patricia Fields of La Feria, Texas; Beverly Hayes of Allendale, Illinois; and Sam Magee and Mark Magee of Austin, Texas. Other survivors are his nieces, Carole Byrom of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Marilyn Sparks of San Diego, California; Diane Aycock of Lubbock, Texas and Mary Jane Seese of Aurora, Colorado. It is suggested that contributions to his memory may be given to the Abilene Tennis Association or St. Paul United Methodist Church.
